Registering For Irving’s Workshops

The purpose of registration for Irving’s workshops is simply to insure that you have a space in the workshop. It is okay to just show up on the day of the workshop if you’re willing to take a chance on there being a space. Irving is renting larger rooms so he doesn’t anticipate a problem. However, in the event of a space shortage, preference will be given to those who have registered. If you decide to register on the day of the course, arriving half an hour early should give you time to do so.

To register for any S.U.N. course send your registration to the teacher of that course, the amount of the payment being either $50 or half the workshop cost, whichever is the smaller of the two. If you’re paying by check, make the check out to the individual teacher, not the organization. In Irving’s case, he is not set up to take credit cards so send either a check or money order (please do not send cash) made out to "Irving Feurst". Payments mailed from countries other than the United States should be drawn in U.S. funds and on a U.S. bank. Mail it to P.O. Box 5900, Hercules, CA 94547 .

Include a sheet of paper with your name, address, phone number(s), e-mail address and the name of the workshop(s). (In case we need to contact you). The date of your registration is considered to be the date we receive your payment. Because of the large number of calls and letters Irving gets, he does not routinely confirm registration, however someone will contact you if there is no longer space in the workshop. If you need to confirm your registration, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Hotel reservations, transportation and meals are the responsibility of the attendee.

How to Get to Irving’s Workshops

Unless stated otherwise in the workshop schedule, all of Irving’s workshops are held in Berkeley at International House or "I. House" for short. I. House is a large domed building located at 2299 Piedmont at the corner of Piedmont and Bancroft. The workshops are almost always held on the second floor in either the Sproul Room or the Home Room. You can reach the second floor by going through the main entrance and up the stairway to your left.

If you’re approaching Berkeley from the North, you can get to I. House by taking Interstate 80 and exiting on University Avenue. Go east on University until you reach Shattuck, turn right on Shattuck, go south on Shattuck for about 6 blocks until you reach Durant, turn left on Durant, go east on Durant until you reach the corner of Durant and Piedmont, turn left on Piedmont and go north one block to Bancroft.

If you’re approaching Berkeley from the South, take Interstate 80 and exit at Ashby Avenue. Go east on Ashby until you reach Shattuck, turn left onto Shattuck, go north on Shattuck for about 12 blocks until you reach Durant, turn right on Durant, go east on Durant until you reach the corner of Durant and Piedmont, turn left on Piedmont and go north one block to Bancroft.

The nearest BART station to I. House is the Berkeley BART station. From there you can catch a 51 bus which lets you off within a few blocks of International House. For further information about getting to I. House, call I. House directly at (510) 642-9490 or AC Transit bus system (510) 817-1717 or BART (510) 465-2278.

Parking Information For Irving’s Workshops

We’ll describe things as if you’ve come down Durant and have reached the corner of Durant and Piedmont. If you turn left and continue on Piedmont, keeping in the lane nearest I. House, you will pass several parking areas located at intervals as you continue north on Piedmont. These are all owned by the University of California and do not require a UC permit on Saturdays and Sundays. The lot nearest to I. House has only 19 spaces and requires you to go into International House and get a ticket form the attendant at the desk. The other lots require you to get a ticket from either an attendant or a machine located at each lot. The last time we checked, the machines required five dollars and took one dollar bills and five dollar bills.

There’s also a parking garage located further away than the previously described lots. The garage is at Durant and Telegraph and, the last time we checked, requires you to use quarters. From the garage to International House is about a 15 minute walk, the last few blocks being uphill. For additional information about parking, please call International House directly at (510) 642-9490.
